Radio Control Field EquipmentThe "Gear" You'll Need

Your first model is about ready to makes its début.  You'll be needing some equipment to support it at the "flight line" or "track".  Most modelers carry their support equipment in a "Field Box".  A field box is a storage component for all those things you need to take to the flying field or track.  You can build one yourself of your own design or choose a kit or pre-built one from our stock that's just right for you.

Here are some of the basic suggested items you will want to have on hand in your field box:

  • Fuel Pump: A fuel pump will transfer fuel quickly from bottle to fuel tank.  You can choose from either a manual (hand crank) or electric pump.
  • Heavy Duty 12V Starter:  The best and most efficient way to start airplanes, cars and boats.
  • 12V 600 mAh Battery Charger:   An AC to DC charger will be needed to keep your 12V battery charged.  These chargers normally come with an LED charging indicator and have long leads and insulated alligator clips.
  • Fast Field Charger:  A fast field charger is used for charging your radio equipment at the track or field.  It can be mounted inside your field box and will monitor several batteries simultaneously.  Battery powered (electric) models necessitate a fast field charger.
  • Power Panel:  A power panel mounts on field box and feeds power to your starters, fuel pumps and glow plugs.
  • Igniter:  An igniter supplies the initial heat to a glow plug for gas engines.  You can chose from the type that run directly off your power panel or you can purchase a self-powered rechargeable igniter that you slip in your pocket and keep on-hand while at the track or field.
  • Spares:  You'll want to be sure to have on-hand certain "expendable" items such as glow plugs and propellers.  It certainly would hurt to have whatever type of adhesive you used to assemble your model on-hand for quick repairs.
  • Tools:  Make note of any special tools you used to assemble your model.  You'll want to take along some of those.  You may need to open an access hatch, tighten a nut or bolt here and there or change a propeller or wheel.
  • Fuel:  Though obvious, your gas model cannot run without fuel.  Most field boxes have a storage area for up to a gallon of fuel.
